The Plague, the Flu, and You

(OMNS, October 27, 2009) Swine flu. Bird flu. The media has everyone worrying about epidemics and pandemics. Yet there is nothing said about one of the great communicable diseases of all time: the plague. The Black Death. No, it is not extinct. There are new cases of plague in the United States every year, totaling over 400 cases since 1950.

So have you had your plague shot?

You haven't?

Why isn't your doctor urging you to get one? Do you know anyone who has had a plague vaccination? Then why is there no plague epidemic? And why is vaccination supposedly the only way to stop a flu epidemic?

One proffered explanation is that the diseases are dissimilar, because influenza is viral, and plague is bacterial. But tetanus is bacterial, and we aggressively vaccinate against that. Indeed, the CDC http://www.cdc.gov/ncird/dbd.html specifies a considerable number of Vaccine Preventable Diseases http://www.cdc.gov/ncird/dbd.html#meningvpd which are bacterial. These include, among others: anthrax, bacterial meningitis, diphtheria, Haemophilus influenzae serotype b, and, of course, pertussis (whooping cough).

Plague is not even on the CDC's list. Wait a minute! The Black Death, the disease that killed at least a quarter of Europe, hasn't even made the list of Vaccine Preventable Diseases?

Worldwide, there are over 2,000 cases, and hundreds of deaths, every year from the plague. In the United States, human plague cases average about 10 to 15 per year. http://www.dhpe.org/infect/plague.html Most cases are in the Southwest. http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/plague/plagwest.htm CDC states that "persons who have regular contact with wild rodents or their fleas" in areas in which plague has occurred should be vaccinated. That's right, it isn't just rats that carry the fleas that carry the plague. Squirrels, mice, rabbits, coyotes, woodchucks, cats and dogs all carry fleas. Fleas are found everywhere. Then why isn't plague everywhere?

One explanation is that plague is climate related. This map shows plague distribution in the US: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/plague/plagwest.htm If incidence were related merely to the heat of the day, we might expect a fair share of plague cases in Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Alabama. But there aren't. If plague is temperature-dependent, it is a confusing illness to say the least: how come almost all USA cases are in the warm, dry Southwest and yet plague decimated Europe in the 1300s? Most of Europe is a lot cooler than the American southwest. Indeed, too warm a climate may actually stop the spread of plague. http://www.reuters.com/article/environmentNews/idUSL24636220080902

Today President Obama declared the swine flu outbreak a national emergency and empowered his health secretary to suspend federal guidelines at hospitals.

It has begun.

Time Magazine recently reports:

Modern Homo sapiens is still evolving. Despite the long-held view that natural selection has ceased to affect humans because almost everybody now lives long enough to have children, a new study of a contemporary Massachusetts population offers evidence of evolution still in action.

The phrase long held is interesting to me. Long held by whom? And by how long? Of course we are still evolving. Any reasonable enlightened human just has to know this by instinct, right?

Scientists...sheesh.

Blessed Rains

I have almost forgotten how to deal with mud. My gorgeous Australian oilskin riding/raincoat is no where to be found. I literally have no memory of what year I last had an opportunity to wear it so it might be gone forever for all I know.

We live right on the line in the dip between Travis and Williamson County. Our land is covered by the light orange color now.

We have been downgraded again to only a moderate drought. Lake Travis, just a stone's throw from my ranch is still down fifty feet, but all the streams are running and the water table is filling up. My horses are muddy, I have to wipe the dogs paws constantly and laundry is piling up. I am thrilled.

Thank You Olaf

Early yesterday morning at the end of a truly lovely and inspired dream of wandering the prairie, feeling like I was searching for something important...I walked my horse into a small low stream that turned into an ocean of warm and welcoming water.

In the last 12 hours we have measured nearly 8 inches of rain on our ranch thanks to the visiting tropical depression Olaf.

Austin and Central Texas has changed its drought status from Exceptional of last week, to Extreme this week, to the amazingly positive classification of Severe drought currently. Severe? Heck we'll take it. We are Texans. Severe is basically normal.

Prayers answered, dreams come true, life is good.

Who Knew?

Driving down to Port Aransas was sad, of course. The drought area encompasses all of Central and South Texas as well, and the view from the car was a familiar parched landscape. The pastures and grasslands burned yellow and brown, and those were the nicer images, as other pastureland had no vegetation to see at all, and it seemed like the few cattle left by the ranchers were hanging their heads. The flat and fluffy fields of cotton were no where to be found, plowed under long ago, failed crops to add to the list of other lost ones of hay and corn.

Other than constant hope and prayer for rain, there wasn't much I could do about it and so, was looking forward to some time at the ocean where I figured the drought wouldn't smack me in the face every single time I took a walk or looked out the window.

Except that it still did.

The ocean, the beach, the wetlands, and even the fishermen are all suffering from the drought here as well.

There is a new wetland exhibit for the public at the Texas University Oceanographic Insititute. Except its not very wet. I saw cracked and parched earth and suffering critters along the salty edges. Moisquitoes, normally quite the nuisance in these areas are absolutely nonexistant. Not in 32 years of visiting here have I been able to make that claim.

The ocean water is so salty from lack of rain, the fishermen, both sport and commercial are watching the saline content affect their "normal" catches.

Dad has managed to bring a few fish in most days of his trip, but there have been more than one disappointing return to the harbor.

There is seabird excrement everywhere, another new sight for me. Cars and boats have the most salt on then I can remember and this morning the humid air was so salty my eyes hurt. The summertime pop up showers are a distant memory.

Even if it rained, a good soaking rain all day, every day, in Central and South Texas for a week, we would STILL be in a horrendous drought.

Suddenly, I feel very thirsty.

Off to the Coast

While extensive home renovation happens I will be taking mom to visit dad in Port Aransas to escape the dust and comings and goings of construction workers. Last summer there was no internet to be had on the island and I don't expect that has changed this summer.

Our traditional scientists have now the ability to predict specific solar activity only 25-36 hours in advance.

My own family has been living in an extensive drought here in Texas and it has been extremely painful for us and our livestock and the wildlife around us. They know very well.

We need water. We ARE water. You have heard it before, we are 80% water. And what a coincidence (but not really...) so too, the earth is made up of 80% water.

Without water there IS no life.
